Porcelain Veneer Resistance to Surface Staining

One of the more reliable claims made for porcelain veneers is that they resist staining, and unlike some cosmetic dentistry claims this one holds up. Glazed dental porcelain is, for practical purposes, a non-porous ceramic surface. Coffee, tea and red wine do not penetrate it.

That does not mean a set of veneers will look identical in ten years. It means that when they do not, the reason lies somewhere other than the porcelain — and the distinction matters, because the causes that do exist are largely preventable or correctable.

Why glazed porcelain resists stain

It is vitrified. Dental porcelain is fired at high temperature, producing a glassy structure with essentially no interconnected porosity at the surface. There is nowhere for pigment molecules to enter.

The glaze layer is a sealed glass surface. Applied in a final firing, it flows and fuses into an extremely smooth, continuous layer with surface roughness well below the threshold at which bacteria and pigment adhere readily.

It does not absorb water. This is the key difference from composite. Composite resin has a polymer matrix that takes up small amounts of water over time, and dissolved pigments travel with it into the material. Porcelain does not, so pigment stays on the surface where it is removed by brushing.

It is chemically stable in the range of pH normally encountered in the mouth.

The margin

This is the most common cause by a long way.

A veneer meets the natural tooth at a thin junction, usually at or just above the gum line. The bonding composite at that junction is a resin, and resin does stain. Over years, a fine dark line can develop along the margin.

It is usually more visible on the gum-side margin than at the edges, and it is more likely where:

• The margin sits in an area that is not cleaned well

• The tooth underneath has recurrent decay at the edge — which is a different and more serious problem

• The margin was slightly over-extended or under-extended at fitting

• The cement layer is thicker than ideal, which happens when the fit is not precise

A stained margin can often be polished and, in some cases, repaired by removing and replacing the outer layer of the cement line. Recurrent decay at a margin requires the veneer to be replaced.

The tooth underneath

Porcelain veneers are thin and at least partly translucent. Light passes through them, so the colour of the underlying tooth contributes to the final appearance.

If the natural tooth darkens over the years — through ageing, trauma, an old root filling, or internal staining — that change shows through the veneer even though the veneer itself is unchanged. The cement

The resin cement itself can discolour over a long period, particularly older-generation materials and particularly where a thick cement layer is visible through a very translucent veneer. Modern cements are considerably more colour-stable, and the amount visible depends on how precisely the veneer fits.

The natural teeth around them

This is the one people do not anticipate.

Porcelain does not change colour. Natural teeth do — they darken gradually with age as dentine thickens, and they take up stain. So a set of veneers on the front teeth that matched the canines perfectly at fitting can look conspicuously lighter a decade later, not because the veneers changed but because everything else did.

A damaged glaze

Here is the important qualifier to everything above: porcelain resists stain while its glaze is intact. Beneath the glaze, the porcelain itself has a slightly more porous microstructure, and once exposed it behaves less well.

The glaze is damaged by:

Abrasive toothpastes, particularly heavy-duty whitening formulations, charcoal pastes and anything marketed as a stain eraser. These are the most common cause of glaze wear and the easiest to avoid.

Abrasive prophylaxis pastes used at cleaning appointments, if the wrong one is used. Tell your hygienist you have veneers.

Acidic exposure over time — frequent acidic drinks, acidic mouthwashes, and in particular acidulated fluoride gels, which etch ceramic surfaces and should not be used on porcelain restorations.

Ultrasonic scaling directly on the porcelain surface, which can chip glaze at the margins. Instrumentation around veneers is done with more care, and air-polishing with a low-abrasive powder is generally preferred.

Chairside adjustment without re-glazing or polishing. If a veneer is adjusted after fitting — to correct the bite or shape an edge — the glaze at that spot is removed. It should be re-polished with a ceramic polishing sequence, which produces a surface comparable to glaze.

How to keep them looking as they did

Use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Ask which one — this is the single most useful thing you can do. Avoid charcoal and aggressive whitening pastes entirely.

Use a soft brush, manual or electric. Electric is fine; pressure is the issue, not the mechanism.

Clean between the teeth daily. Margins sit interdentally as well as at the gum, and the interdental margin is where staining most often starts unnoticed.

Keep the gum healthy. Recession exposes the margin and the root beneath it — a root surface does stain, and it does not look like porcelain. Our article on preventing gum irritation from veneers covers this.

Tell every clinician you have veneers, so that appropriate pastes and instruments are used.

Wear a night guard if you grind.

Moderate the obvious culprits — not because the porcelain will stain, but because the margins, the natural teeth beside them and the gum line all will. Rinsing with water after coffee, tea or red wine helps all three.

Do not use at-home whitening kits on veneers expecting them to lighten. They will not, and some products are abrasive or acidic enough to affect the surface.

What can be done if they have discoloured

Professional polishing with a ceramic polishing system restores gloss where the glaze has been dulled, and removes surface deposits. This is often all that is needed.

Margin repair — the stained outer portion of the cement line can sometimes be removed and replaced with fresh composite, then polished.

Whitening the surrounding natural teeth where the mismatch is caused by the other teeth darkening rather than the veneers changing.

Internal whitening of the underlying tooth, in some cases, though this is not always possible once a veneer is bonded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do porcelain veneers stain?

The glazed porcelain surface itself resists stain and does not absorb pigment. Discolouration around veneers usually comes from the margins, the tooth beneath or the neighbouring natural teeth.

Can I drink coffee and red wine with veneers?

Yes. The porcelain will not absorb colour. The margins and surrounding natural teeth can, so rinsing with water afterwards is sensible.

Will whitening toothpaste keep my veneers white?

No, and many are abrasive enough to dull the glaze over time, which makes staining more likely rather than less.

Why has a dark line appeared at my gum?

Commonly stain in the cement line at the margin, sometimes recession exposing the margin or root, and occasionally decay. It needs examining to distinguish between them.

Can veneers be whitened?

Porcelain does not respond to whitening agents. Where the mismatch is due to the natural teeth darkening, whitening those may restore the balance.

Can a dulled veneer be re-polished?

Yes, with a ceramic polishing sequence. This restores gloss, though it is not identical to the original fired glaze.
