What counts as a dental emergency? As a guide: a knocked-out or badly displaced adult tooth, bleeding from the mouth that does not stop with pressure, swelling of the face or gums, severe or worsening toothache that is not controlled by over-the-counter pain relief, a broken tooth with sharp edges or exposed nerve, and a lost crown, bridge or filling that is causing pain. If you are unsure whether your problem is urgent, call us — we would always rather talk it through than have you wait in discomfort.

If an adult tooth has been knocked out, time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown only — avoid touching the root — and, if it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. If you feel able, gently reposition it in the socket and bite on a clean cloth; otherwise store it in milk or inside your cheek and contact us immediately. Prompt reimplantation can give the tooth a meaningful chance, while delay may put the tooth at risk. Baby teeth should not be reimplanted.

For bleeding after an extraction or injury, sit upright and bite firmly on a clean, damp gauze or cloth for 15–20 minutes without checking. Avoid rinsing, hot drinks and exercise, which can disturb the clot. If bleeding continues despite steady pressure, call us during opening hours or NHS 111 out of hours. Bleeding you cannot control at all warrants urgent medical attention.

Facial swelling usually indicates infection and should not be left to see if it settles. Keep hydrated, avoid heat packs on the face, and take pain relief as directed on the packet while you arrange an appointment. Important: swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or eye, or is spreading rapidly, should be treated as a medical emergency — go to A&E or call 999 rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

For severe toothache, over-the-counter paracetamol or ibuprofen — taken according to the packet instructions and any advice from your pharmacist — can help while you wait to be seen. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. A broken tooth with a sharp edge can be covered temporarily with sugar-free chewing gum or an over-the-counter dental repair kit; a dislodged crown can sometimes be held in place the same way, but bring it with you rather than using household glue.

Here is how a same-day emergency appointment works at our practice in Marylebone. When you call, our reception team asks a few questions to understand the urgency and books you the earliest suitable slot — usually the same day where possible if you call before 11am. At the appointment, your dentist examines the area, takes a digital X-ray where clinically justified, and explains the diagnosis in plain English. The first priority is getting you comfortable and stabilising the problem.

The emergency consultation fee is £95, with a new-patient offer of £30 for those who have not attended in the previous 24 months, and it is confirmed when you book. Any treatment needed — a dressing, a temporary filling, recementing a crown, starting root canal treatment or an extraction — is explained and priced in writing before you commit to anything. From that point, your written, itemised quote is confirmed before treatment begins, so there are no surprises at the desk.
