Clear Aligners vs Fixed Braces for Adults: An Honest Comparison

Removable aligners suit most mild-to-moderate adult cases — but not all. Here's how the two approaches genuinely compare.

Clear Aligners vs Fixed Braces for Adults: An Honest Comparison

Adults researching teeth straightening usually narrow the choice to two routes: near-invisible removable aligners, or traditional fixed braces. Both move teeth using controlled, gentle force — the differences lie in visibility, lifestyle and the movements each handles best.

Where aligners shine

Aligners such as ProAligner are removable for eating, brushing and important meetings, near-invisible in daily life, and typically more comfortable — no brackets or wires to rub. For crowding, spacing and many bite issues in the mild-to-moderate range, they perform extremely well.

The trade-off is discipline: aligners only work when worn 22+ hours a day. If they live in your pocket, your teeth stay where they are.

Where fixed braces still win

Certain complex movements — significant rotations, large vertical changes, some skeletal discrepancies — remain more predictable with fixed appliances under the care of an appropriately experienced orthodontist.

We are candid about this: if your case falls outside what aligners handle predictably, we will tell you at your consultation and refer you appropriately rather than force a fit.

The part everyone forgets: retention

Whichever route you choose, teeth drift back without retainers. Budget for retention from day one — every written ProAligner plan at Wimpole Dental includes it.
