Retainers After Teeth Straightening: Why They're Not Optional
Teeth have memory. Here's why retention is part of treatment — not an optional extra — and how to choose between fixed and removable.
The least glamorous truth in teeth straightening: the fibres that hold your teeth remember where they used to be, and for months after treatment they quietly pull your teeth back toward their old positions. Relapse is not a risk — without retention, it is the default.
Fixed retainers
A slim wire bonded behind the front teeth, invisible from the front and working 24/7 with nothing to remember. From £450 per arch (standard price) at Wimpole Dental. It needs periodic checks — we review yours at every examination — and careful cleaning with interdental brushes or floss threaders.
Removable retainers
Clear, aligner-style trays worn nightly. Easy to clean around, but they only work when worn — and they live dangerous lives near dogs, pockets and hotel bathrooms. Many of our patients choose both: fixed wire plus a nightly tray as insurance.
The bottom line
Budget for retention as part of straightening, not after it. Every written ProAligner plan we produce includes the retention phase — if a quote you're comparing doesn't mention retainers, ask why.
