A Nervous Patient's Guide to Visiting the Dentist

UK surveys suggest roughly one adult in three feels anxious about dental visits, and around one in ten avoids the dentist altogether because of it. If that's you, two things are worth knowing: your anxiety is completely legitimate, and modern dentistry has genuinely good answers to it.

Tell us — it changes everything

The single most effective step is saying so when you book. It costs nothing and changes how your visit is planned: longer appointments, no rushed moments, everything explained before it happens, and an agreed stop signal that puts you in control at all times.

Strategies that genuinely work

Start small: a check-up or hygiene visit rebuilds confidence before any treatment. Bring headphones — music or a podcast dampens the sounds that trigger many people. Ask for a running commentary, or ask for silence; both are fine. For longer procedures, sedation options exist and can be discussed at consultation.

What we never do: judge. Whether it's been two years or twenty, our team has seen it all, and the only direction that matters is forward.
