Why Hygiene Visits Matter More Than You Think

A hygiene appointment is not a posh polish — it's among the most evidence-backed 30 minutes in preventive dentistry.

Why Hygiene Visits Matter More Than You Think

If dentistry had a single highest-value habit, it would be the regular hygiene visit. Gum disease — not decay — is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the UK, and it progresses silently: no pain, little drama, until teeth loosen.

What actually happens in the chair

Your hygienist measures your gum health, removes the hardened tartar that no toothbrush can shift, lifts surface staining with airflow polishing, and — the underrated part — shows you exactly where your home routine is missing, with tools matched to your mouth rather than generic advice.

How often is enough?

For most adults, every six months; for anyone with a history of gum problems, every three to four. Your interval should be personal, based on measured gum health rather than habit.

At Wimpole Dental a hygiene visit is £89 (standard) and £49 for new patients. Against the cost of treating established gum disease — let alone replacing lost teeth — prevention is some of the best-value dentistry there is.
