Bleeding Gums: What Your Body Is Telling You

Blood when you brush is never 'normal' — but caught early, the underlying cause is usually reversible.

Bleeding Gums: What Your Body Is Telling You

Pink on the toothbrush is so common that many people assume it's normal. It isn't. Healthy gums don't bleed — bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is your immune system responding to plaque bacteria at the gum line.

The progression to understand

Stage one is gingivitis: red, puffy gums that bleed on brushing. At this stage the condition is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care — no permanent damage done.

Left alone, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation moves below the gum line and begins destroying the bone that holds your teeth. That damage is controllable but not reversible — which is why acting at the bleeding-gums stage matters so much.

How it's actually treated

Professional removal of the plaque and tartar driving the inflammation, then a home routine that keeps it from returning: brushing twice daily along the gum line, and daily interdental cleaning — the step almost everyone skips and the one that matters most.

A common trap: gums that bleed less because you've started avoiding them. Gentler isn't better here — thorough and gentle is. Your hygienist will show you the technique.
